I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”
Bernice Bradley Henry, a beloved mother, wife, sister, and friend, was born on September 19, 1939, to the late Elijah and Carrie E. Bradley. She was the third oldest of eleven children, born into a home filled with faith and family.
Bernice began her education at Coopers Mill School in Wysacky, South Carolina, before moving on to Dennis High School in Bishopville. She was a proud member of the first graduating class of the Mount Pleasant High School Rattlers in 1958. Her thirst for knowledge continued throughout her life, leading her to pursue further studies after relocating to Newark, New Jersey.
For over twenty-five years, Bernice was a dedicated employee of Conrad Hanover Industries in Newark. Ever the lifelong learner, she later transitioned into healthcare, earning her certificate as a Certified Nursing Assistant to provide compassionate care to those in need.
Bernice was a woman of many talents and a true entrepreneur at heart. She possessed a deep passion for fashion, becoming a self-taught designer of original “Beautiful Hats” and unique outfits to match. Her creativity extended into the culinary arts as a caterer for weddings and corporate events, where she was known for her delicious homemade cakes, pastries, and healthy dishes. Her eye for beauty was also evident in her passion for interior design; she was happiest when her hands were busy creating joy for others.
During her years in Newark, she served faithfully at Promised Land Baptist Church. Upon returning to her home state of South Carolina and settling in Columbia, she remained a pillar of strength and elegance.
A true “fashionista” and a woman of strong work ethics, Bernice was deeply committed to her family. She famously opened her home to her younger siblings, providing a foundation for them to build their lives. While she was known for her strict rules—designed to instill independence and responsibility—her actions were always rooted in a profound love and a desire to see her family succeed.
At Rest
Bernice has gone to join those who preceded her in death: her husband, Calvin Henry; her parents, Elijah and Carrie E. Bradley; her sister, Mary Alice Bradley; and her brothers, William Henry, Ira B. Bradley, and Erone H. Bradley.
Those Who Cherish Her Memory are a Son: Leonardo D. Henry (Columbia, SC); Grandson: Timothy Lamar Henry (Camden, SC); Sisters: Rosa Lee Bradley-Ford (Bishopville, SC); Cynthia Bradley (Bishopville, SC); Ponthellio Wilson (Leroy) (Bishopville, SC); Brothers: Willie James Bradley (Bishopville, SC); Elijah Bradley, Jr. (Bishopville, SC); Reverend Alfred Bradley (Bishopville, SC); Kenneth Bradley (Chesterfield, VA); In-Laws: Sister-in-law: Mrs. Elouise Henry Edwards (James Ray); Brothers-in-law: William Henry, Tony Henry (Columbia, SC), and Ravis Henry (Marie) (Willingboro, NJ); Special Friend: Levette Allen (Columbia, SC), Murlene Burgess (Newark, NJ), Elenore Mitchell (Newark, NJ); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.
“And now with earthly tasks completed, Bernice is resting from her labors.”
