Bruce Edward Johnson

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Elder Bruce Johnson, assistant pastor of Shining Light Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Elder Johnson passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

The family will receive friends at: 761 Cedar Ridge Road, Darlington, SC

Arrangements will be announced by Davis Funeral Home, LLC of Hartsville,SC.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 

Assistant Pastor Bruce E. Johnson lived a dedicated life to the truth of God’s word, beautifully embodying the message of 2 Timothy 2:15 as a worker who labored with love and needeth not be ashamed. On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, he completed his earthly service and entered into eternal rest with the Heavenly Father.

 Elder Bruce Edward Johnson, Sr. was born July 11, 1958, in Sacramento, California to James B. Johnson and Elizabeth D. Johnson.

 Elder Johnson received his High School Diploma at Sacramento High School. He furthered his educational studies at Sacramento Community College. He later joined the United States Army where he served for twenty years as an Automated Logistics Specialist. After his retirement in 1998, Bruce volunteered as the foreman for Quality Car Care in Darlington, SC. 

Elder Johnson was married to the love of his life, Eldress Barbara George Johnson. God blessed this marriage for 44 years as they walked hand-in-hand through life’s triumphs and challenges up until his death. Within those years, they were blessed with three children and seven grandchildren. Minister Johnson enjoyed spending time with his family. He would stop everything he was doing to spend time with his grandchildren. He didn’t meet a stranger. He wasn’t a man of many words, but when he spoke, he spoke with volume. 

Elder Johnson was a true man of God whose life was a living testament to faith, love, kindness, and deep devotion to his Heavenly Father. His faith was not just something he spoke about, it was the foundation of every part of his daily life. He was the Assistant Pastor at Shining Light Holiness Church under the leadership of Pastor Janie M. Wilds where he served faithfully as the Asst. Pastor of Shining Light for twenty-eight years. He also served as Director of the Church Choir, President of Sunday School, and Head of Men’s Bible Study. Minister Johnson was a man after God’s own heart and he loved God. He was a humble servant and faithful to the house of prayer. He loved people and led different ones to Christ. He walked humbly, loved generously, and always sought to reflect Christ’s love to his family, friends, and the community.

 Elder Johnson found pleasure in reading and studying the Bible, singing, watching sports and Western movies, spending time with his grandkids, worshipping in church, and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 

Elder Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, James B. Johnson and Elizabeth D. Johnson. 

Surviving to cherish his memories are: his devoted and loving wife, Eldress Barbara George Johnson; children: Anthony (Charmion) Johnson of Florence, SC, Bruce Johnson, Jr. of Darlington, SC, and Christian Johnson of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren: Kaylyn Ross, Madison Johnson, Shaniyah Howle, Kyler Johnson, Anthony Wade Johnson, and Isaiah Pearson; brother, Kevin L. Johnson; sister, Denise R. Johnson of CA; brothers-in-law: Edward (Brenda) George, William (Mary) George, and Wallace George, all of Darlington, SC; sisters-in-law, Pastor Janie M. Wilds of Darlington, SC, and Eldress Mary George of Florence, SC; godchildren: Jermiah (Shakeyy) Harriott, Imani Grant, Heaveni White, and Haley White, all Darlington, SC. 

Elder Johnson is remembered by those who shared his life, both near and distant, and by the many individuals whose paths crossed with him over the years. These would include: Blaeten Cain of Spartanburg, SC, Steven Howle of Lamar, SC, and Derrick Lee of Cheraw, SC; and a host of nephews, nieces, other close relatives, and friends.
