It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of
Mr. David L. McFarland, III.
Mr. McFarland passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
The family will receive friends at: 1215 14th Street, Hartsville, SC.
Arrangements will be announced by Davis Funeral Home, LLC of Hartsville, SC.
Mr. David Lee McFarland, III was the loving son of David L. McFarland, Jr., and the late Juanita Coleman McFarland. He was born in Hartsville, South Carolina on November 10, 1975. He was the youngest child born to this union. David accepted Jesus Christ at an early age. He was baptized and became a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Hartsville, South Carolina. He was educated in the public schools and was a 1994 graduate of Hartsville High School. Upon his graduation, David attended Florence-Darlington Technical College and later transferred to Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina where he became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and graduated in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Following his education at Benedict, he began his career as a social worker with the South Carolina Department of Social Services and completed his Master of Human Resources Degree.
Once David moved back home to Hartsville, he continued his career with the Darlington County Disabilities and Special Needs Board. He loved his coworkers and all the wonderful people that his office served.
David loved his fraternity. The brotherhood he shared with his fellow Alphas was one of the great joys of his life. He cherished the fellowship of his brothers and was devoted to the fraternity’s call to serve, showing up faithfully for his community and giving generously of himself at every opportunity.
He loved the New York Knicks and the Washington Commanders, but his greatest love was for his alma mater, the Benedict College Tigers. He was always filled with joy talking about Benedict and encouraged young people to attend. David diligently coordinated with fellow alumni, working to strengthen the Benedict community and keep the spirit alive. He even served as the Hartsville Chapter President of the Benedict College Alumni Association. His love for his college was not nostalgic sentiment alone, but an active, ongoing commitment to honoring what Benedict gave him by giving back in return.
He was a faithful and dutiful member of Jerusalem Baptist Church. He was always ready to serve and be of assistance whenever he was asked. He recently became a member of the Usher Board.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita Coleman McFarland.
David’s legacy will be cherished by: his father, David McFarland, Jr. of Hartsville, SC; sister, Davita (Gerald) Malloy of Hartsville, SC; brother Derrick (Lorraine) McFarland of Lexington, SC; nephews, Gerald D.
