It is with an heavy heart that we announce the passing of Deacon Victor Carnell South, Sr.
Deacon South passed on Monday, September 23, 2024 at Virginia Beach General Hospital in Virginia Beach, VA.
All services are entrusted to Davis Funeral Home, LLC of Hartsville, SC.
Deacon Victor Carnell South Sr. was born September 20, 1957, to the late Mr. James Andrew
Major and Ms. Audrey Mae South in Richmond Virginia. He departed his earthly life on Monday,
September 23, 2024, at Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Deacon Victor C. South Sr. graduated from Middlesex High School in Saluda, Virginia in 1975.
He received a bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Hampton University formerly known
as Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia where he was one of the top football athletes in Virginia
receiving numerous awards for his talent.
After graduating college, he began his career as a Physical Education teacher at numerous high
schools throughout the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. After teaching, he became a truant officer
at Surry County High School for many years. He also worked at the shipyard in Newport News,
Virginia. Deacon South later began a new career at the Virginia Pilot Newspaper Company where
he worked there for 23 years. When his health began to decline, he began working at Portsmouth
Public Schools as a bus monitor until retirement. Deacon South believed in providing for his family
and he instilled that in his children, especially his boys. He was known for being a great provider
for his family up to his passing.
Deacon South was a dedicated member of his community. He changed the lives of many young
males through a mentoring program called The Youth Conservation Corps. Under his leadership,
they completed numerous community projects and events. He was passionate about helping others
reach their full potential. Through this program, he was able to make a difference and show those
students how to become productive men in society.
Deacon South was an active member of The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostles’
Doctrine Inc., serving as Deacon for the Chesapeake branch. He was baptized in “Jesus Christ”
name in 1985. He received the holy ghost soon after. He was known for his quiet and sweet spirit.
He was also known for his incredible photos that he would take of the saints. Those who did not
like taking pictures would allow Deacon South to take photos of them because of his sweet spirit
and ability to capture the best moments among the saints. Deacon South was a dedicated member
of the church and he remained faithful until his death.
Deacon South enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He met the love of his life Mrs.
Loretta Leaks in 1978. They got married on July 10, 1982. Together they had six amazing children
of which he was so proud. They also have 10 beautiful grandchildren, two sons-in-law, and two
daughters-in-law, who he loved so much. He was also expecting another grandbaby in
December. Deacon South and Mother Loretta South have been married for 42 years.
Those left to thank God for his presence and cherish his memory include his wife, Mother Loretta
South, daughters, Charmaine Blount (John), Donna South, Nobie Hales(Charles); sons, Victor
South Jr. (Sheila), James South, Aaron South (O’sha); brothers Larry South, Everette Leonard
South (Lisa), Andrew South, Benjamin Major; sisters Andrea Brown (Peachie), Norma Rhines,
and Amy Jackson; grandchildren Jonasia Blount, Jonathan Blount, Cali South, Josiah Blount,
Victor South III, Aaron South II, Jayden Blount, Savannah South, Cameron South, Amina South,
and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and his wonderful church family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. James Andrew Major and Ms. Audrey Mae
South, brothers James Pendelton and Vincent South, and a host of other family relatives.
