Mr. Brown passed away on Monday, September 29, 2025, at Carolina Pines Medical Center in Hartsville, SC.
Arrangements will be announced by Davis Funeral Home, LLC of Hartsville, SC.

Early Life and Family
Mr. Harry “Hippy” Brown was born on September 30, 1945, to the late Johnny “Nick” Brown and the late Helen Wingate Brown. He was the last surviving son of his parents. Raised in Darlington County, South Carolina, Harry grew up surrounded by family and community. He was saved and attended Faith Mission Unity Church of Deliverance, under the leadership of Bishop and Evangelist Gant.
Education and Career
Harry, affectionately known as “Hippy,” spent his early years working on farms in his hometown before moving to Colorado to join the Job Corps. There, he specialized in auto mechanics and automobile painting, skills he continued to practice throughout his life until he was sidelined by illness. In his later years, he resided in an assisted living facility, where he received medical care and support while maintaining his independence as much as possible.
Personality and Relationships
Harry was beloved by many for his warm personality and positive outlook. He was known for always wearing a smile and greeting everyone with kindness. Harry had a natural talent for humor, often lightening the mood with jokes and playful antics, earning him the reputation as the family clown. He rarely deep bond of friendship and love. T hose Who Preceded Him family members and friends. showed anger or sadness, preferring instead to spread joy wherever he went.
He enjoyed eating what he called “wild meat,” and was known for requesting the head, claiming, “The meat tastes better coming from the head.” Harry had a strong bond with each of his siblings, and he shared a particularly close relationship with his sister Lucy. He also took pride in his appearance, favoring flashy clothes and always presenting himself neatly.
His niece, Johnnie Mae Brown, shared a special connection with Harry, speaking with him at least three times a day whenever possible, reflecting deep bond of friendship and love.

Harry “Hippy” Brown was preceded in death by: his parents; his brothers: Amos “Red Boy,” Sylvester “Hamp,” Johnny “Ralph,” George “Bubble,” and Robert “Wiesel” Brown; his sisters: Christine Moses, Caroline “Tee,” Pompy, Yvonne, and Lucy Brown; his grandson, Cory Brown; and many other beloved family members and friends.
Those Who Cherish His Memory
He is remembered and mourned by: his children, Patricia Ann Brown of Lydia, SC, Nancy Ann (Calvin) Cooks of Hartsville, SC, Michale Scott of Darlington, SC, and Steve O’Neal of Wilson, NC; sister, Bertha Mae Brown of Hartsville, SC; two half-brothers, Ernest James of McBee, SC and Bishop Bennie Lee James of Lugoff, SC; 5 grandchildren: Roshawn (Tanisha) Brown of Hartsville, SC, Elijah Pauley of Lydia, SC, Shannon (Spencer) Canon of Lamar, SC, Ashley Cooks of Darlington, SC and Calvin A. Cooks III, of Concord, NC; 14 greatgrandchildren; mother of his daughters, Gladys Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
