My Life, My Story

Mary Agnes McPhail Miller

July 7, 1947 – October 1, 2026

If you are reading these words, my earthly journey has come to an end, but what a journey it has been. A life filled with love, lessons, laughter, hard work, and memories that I hope will bring a smile to your face whenever you think of me. While I may no longer be here in the way you have always known me, I leave behind a lifetime of love and a story worth remembering.

My story began on July 7, 1947, in Darlington County, South Carolina, where I was born to my loving parents, the late Booker T. McPhail and Lottie London McPhail. I was the fourth of nine children, and growing up in a large family taught me early the importance of love, patience, togetherness, and looking out for one another. Those early years helped shape the woman I would become.

I received my education in Darlington County and proudly graduated with the Class of 1965. Like many young women with dreams of something more, I eventually made my way to New York, ready to embrace new opportunities and build a life of my own.

It was there that I discovered a calling that would become a significant part of my life’s purpose: caring for others. I began my career as a nursing assistant and later became a licensed practical nurse. Nursing was more than a profession to me; it was an opportunity to offer compassion, comfort, and dignity to people when they needed it most. Throughout my career, I had the privilege of serving at USPH, Sisters of Charity Hospital, and Bayley Seton Hospital. After 38 years of dedication, I retired knowing that I had given my best to a profession that meant so much to me.

But don’t think my life was all work and no enjoyment! I appreciated the simple pleasures that made each day special. I enjoyed settling in to watch my favorite soap operas, The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, and All My Children. I loved a good word puzzle that kept my mind busy, and I enjoyed traveling, seeing new places, and making memories along the way. Sometimes, the greatest joys in life are found in the simplest moments.

Of all the things I accomplished, nothing meant more to me than my family. Being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt brought a special kind of richness to my life. My family was my heart, and each generation gave me new reasons to smile, celebrate, and be thankful.

To my husband, George Clark, thank you for being a part of my life’s journey and sharing the moments that became our story.

To my children, Deirdre Miller, Marcus Miller, and Keicha Miller, you each hold a special place in my heart. No matter how old you became or where life carried you, you would always be my children, and my love for you would always remain.

To my precious daughter, Kaicha Miller, who went before me in death, you were never forgotten. A mother’s love does not end with goodbye, and you remained forever a part of my heart.

To my grandchildren, Jessica Phillips, Jalissa Sheppard, Jayden Phillips, Ashley Thomas, Karelle Artist, and Ashanti Miller, watching our family grow through you was one of life’s sweetest blessings. I hope you will always carry the love, strength, and lessons passed down through our family.

And to my beautiful great-grandchildren, Wyatt Phillips, Liam Phillips, Dylan Phillips, Jaslene Nixon, Julina Nixon, Nakhai Ortiz, and Lyric Impellizzeri, you are part of the legacy I leave behind. Though our time together may never seem long enough, I hope the stories told about me will remind you that you come from a family rooted in love.

To my godson, Alex Dale, know that you, too, held a special place in my life and heart.

I was also blessed with the love of my siblings. To my sisters, Bernice Robinson, Linda McPhail, and Gail McPhail, and my brothers, Andrew McPhail, Booker T. McPhail, and Dan McPhail, thank you for the memories, the laughter, and the bond that began long before we understood just how precious family truly is.

I lovingly remember my brother, Roosevelt McPhail, and my sister, Margaret Faure, who preceded me in death, along with our beloved parents. Each of them will forever be part of my story.

To my many nieces, nephews, and extended family members, thank you for filling my life with so many meaningful connections. And to my special friends, Conswella Richardson, Ruth McCall, Doris McFarland, Frances James, and Barbra Jean McPhail, thank you for the gift of friendship, companionship, and memories that made my journey even more beautiful.

As I reflect on my 79 years of life, I hope I am remembered not simply for the years I lived or the work I accomplished, but for the love I gave, the lives I touched, and the family I helped nurture.

If there is one thing I would want you to take from my story, it is this: cherish your family, find joy in the little things, work hard for what matters, and never underestimate the difference a little kindness can make in someone’s life.

So, as you gather to remember me, I hope you will share a story, enjoy a laugh, and hold one another a little closer. Remember the good times, the conversations, the family gatherings, and perhaps even those afternoons when I was enjoying my favorite soap operas.

My journey here has ended, but my story continues through each of you.

And while you may miss my presence, I hope you will always feel my love.

Forever loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten.

 With all my love,
