“Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”
Ephesians 6:2-3
Even though our hearts are heavy and sad today, there is a great sense of joy to know that Mrs. Mattie M. Knight has finished her race and is in the presence of the Lord whom she served faithfully for so many decades. She has received that welcome from Christ that we all long to hear: “Well done, good and faithful servant; enter into the joy of your Lord.”
Mattie was born on December 23, 1918, in Hartsville SC to Richard and Priscilla Ruffin. Mattie went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 15, 2025. Mattie lived a long, fruitful life. Her life was a reflection of wisdom and grace.
Mattie attended the public schools in Darlington County. For many years she worked as a housekeeper. Mattie found pleasures in the simple things in life. She loved to cook. She always had a smile for everyone and a warm greeting for you. We will miss her smile, her wisdom, and her love. But we also have hope because we know that she is now resting in the arms of Jesus.
Mattie was a member of Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church. She was a remarkable Godly woman. She trusted and she obeyed our God. And for the Christian there is no greater joy than to be in the presence of our Lord; The One that loves them like no one else can.
Mattie was preceded in death by her husband William E. Knight, two sons Edward Knight and Harvey Knight; sister-in-law Flossie Knight; William J Stubbs; grandchildren Torres and Corinthia; four sisters and two brothers.
Mattie leaves to cherish her memories daughter Ethel K. Stubbs; daughter in law Mary Knight; grandchildren Barbara Knight, Harvey (Linda) Knight, Christopher Knight, Dexter (Gina) Knight, Edward H. Knight, Deidra Knight, and Geraldine Brown; thirty-six great grandchildren; forty-nine great-great grandchildren; Goddaughter Mary Washington; a host of nieces, nephews, and other close relatives and friends.
Mattie’s legacy of love, service, prayer, and faithfulness will continue to inspire all who knew her. Let us honor her memory by carrying forward the lessons she taught us in the way we live our own lives.
