Sarah Mason Murray was born on November 5, 1964 in Hartsville, SC (Darlington County) to JD and Vicy Lee Hooks Mason. A beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Sarah passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, in McLeod’s Hospital in Florence, South Carolina.

Sarah or “Fox” as her family affectionately called her, attended Darlington County Schools and graduated Hartsville High School in 1983 where she ran track.

Born with a heart for family and service, Sarah was a birth member of Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Bishopville, SC, where she faithfully served on kitchen committee and worshiped for many years. In 2022, Sarah rededicated her life to the Lord at Little Zion MBC.

On September 2, 1995, she united in marriage with the love of her life, Calvin “Doby” Murray. Together, they built a strong and loving family, raising eight children and cherishing the joy of three beautiful grandchildren.

Sarah’s hardworking spirit was evident throughout her professional life. Sarah worked as a server at Pizza Hut immediately after high school. She went on to work several years as a machinist at Anderson Brass. She found her passion and purpose in her work at Bi-Lo working in the deli, floral and meat departments. After a three-year stint at Bi-Lo, she moved on to Harris Teeter and was employed at Harris Teeter for 28 years as a certified meat butcher, seafood specialist and delicatessen manager there. Here she was known for her expertise and warm customer service. Her passion for food extended beyond the grocery store aisles—she was also a gifted entrepreneur who ran a successful catering business, bringing flavor and joy to countless wedding receptions, celebrations, and special events.

Sarah’s hobbies and favorite pastimes were playing softball, cooking, and\ entertaining family and friends in her home. By all who knew her, she was known as the life of the party everywhere she went. Sarah’s legacy of love, dedication, and excellence will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, JD and Vicy Mason; her daughters Ameila Mason and Felicia Mason; granddaughter, Lyric Shirley; siblings Ethel Wilson, LD Mason, Joseline Brailey.
