It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing of Mrs. Shirley Lucas.
Mrs. Lucas passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at her residence.
The family will receive friends at:
1001 Hampton St. Hartsville, SC.
Arrangements will be announced by Davis Funeral Home, LLC of Hartsville, SC.
“According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:20-21
Today, we gather to celebrate the life of Shirley Ann Sowell Lucas, a beloved child of God. Shirley lived with a heart full of faith, reflecting Christ’s love in every action. Whether through quiet acts of kindness or steadfast encouragement, Shirley reminded us of the power of God’s grace. We rejoice knowing Shirley is now at peace in the presence of the Lord, and her legacy of faith will continue to inspire us all.
Shirley was born May 2, 1956 to Bobby Jean McDaniels and Cornithel Sowell. She was raised by Mr. James Johnson Sr. and Ms. Ernestine Sowell. Shirley departed this earthly life into eternal rest on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
Shirley received her formal education in the public schools of Darlington County. She was a graduate of Butler High School in the graduating Class of 1974.
Shirley knew and understood the value of working. She worked several jobs to support her family. She was employed by Pizza Hut and Ruth’s Drive Inn. She was also a well known caterer. Shirley was also the manager of Hartsville High School cafeteria for over twenty-five years. It was there that she made lasting impacts on the lives of students and staff. She lived by 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, embodying patience, kindness, and love in all she did.
Shirley loved cooking for herself and others. She was a great cook. She also found pleasure in traveling. Her favorite pastime was spending time with family and family gatherings. She loved her family. She enjoyed spending quality time with her four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Shirley was a long term member of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She loved the Lord. Her love for Christ was exemplified through her actions, treating everyone with kindness and compassion. Her faith in God was the foundation of her joy which was evident in her beautiful smile.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-five years, Joe “Rooster” Lucas, Jr. and sister Shirley Mc Daniels.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memories and legacy: Children Pamela Lucas (Michael Rice), Joe Lucas (Shay); and Derrick Lucas (Karen); Grandchildren Kieran Lucas (Curtisha Crummy), Tiara Lucas (Nathaniel Merritts), Niya Willis, Alaija Lucas, Harmony J. Williams, Ni’Reash R. Timmons, Jr., and Tray’Shawn Joe Lucas-Timmons; Siblings JoAnn Johnson, James Johnson, Cynthia Graham (Michael), Linda McDaniel, Tommy McDaniel and Peggy Cotton (Tommy); Sister in law Catherine H. Brown; Nieces Carol Hunter, Cathy Hunter, and Cindy Hunter; the McDonald Family; and a host of other close relatives and friends.
Though our hearts ache, we rejoice and find pleasure in knowing that Shirley is now in the presence of the Lord, where we will one day be reunited.
