Mrs. Vermella Grant Johnson, affectionately known as “Oma,” was born on July 18, 1952, in Darlington, South Carolina. She peacefully transitioned from this earthly life on Monday, September 28, 2026, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Vermella was a proud 1970 graduate of Rosenwald High School in Society Hill, South Carolina, where she enjoyed playing basketball for the Eagles.

For more than 40 years, Vermella was employed with Galey & Lord, where she worked faithfully as an inspector. She took great pride in her work, loved what she did, and was known for being exceptionally good at her job.

At a young age, Vermella joined Bethesda Baptist Church, where she faithfully served the Lord and her church family in many capacities. Throughout the years, she served on the Usher Board and Pastor’s Aide, as a Deaconess, member of the What I Can Club, and as a member of the Gospel Choir. Her service reflected her love for God, her church, and her community.

Vermella also treasured the simple joys of life. She loved spending time with family and friends, playing bingo, shopping, and enjoying a good meal at Golden Corral. Her presence, laughter, and love created memories that will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Vermella was preceded in death by: her parents, Alma Grant and James Williams; son, Gregory Grant, Sr.; grandson, Gregory Grant, Jr.; and siblings: Geraldine Joseph, Mae Dee Brown, Harold Grant, Sr., Albert Grant, Roy Grant, and Marion Grant, Sr.

Those left to cherish her life and hold dear the many loving memories she leaves behind include: her devoted husband of 36 years, Michael Johnson; a loving daughter, Tara (Lindsey) Grant and a devoted son, Jamal (Yasmin) Grant, both of Society Hill, South Carolina; and one stepson, Michael Guillette of Brooklyn, New York.

She also leaves to cherish her memory: twelve grandchildren: Ashley (Trevor) Brisbon of Florence, South Carolina, Ka’Shawn (Jasmine) Byrd of Fayetteville, North Carolina, McKenzie Grant of Cheraw, South Carolina, Ka’Shira (Alonte) Byrd of Society Hill, South Carolina, Bentlee (Carlie) Hall and Tramarion Grant, both of Hartsville, South Carolina, and Aneya Taylor, Tarronia Grant, Chase Taylor, Jordan Taylor, Avianna Taylor, and Teresse Taylor, all of Darlington, South Carolina.

Her legacy continues through five great-grandchildren: Gregory Grant, Carter Brisbon, Sienna Campbell, Kamry Byrd, and Ka’Sai Byrd; and one bonus greatgrandchild, Aubrey Price.

Vermella also leaves four siblings to cherish her memory: Rosa Lee Gattison of Bennettsville, South Carolina, Herbert (Joann) Grant of Hartsville, South Carolina and Jimmy Grant and Charles (Lila) Grant, both of Society Hill, South Carolina.

She is also lovingly remembered by five sisters-in-law: Marie Grant, Mary Alice Grant, Mary Sue Grant, and Helen (John) James, all of Society Hill, South Carolina, and Tanja Johnson of Bronx, New York; and two brothers-in-law, Jasper Joseph of Columbia, South Carolina, and Tyrone (Katasha) Johnson of Brooklyn, New York.

Vermella was also blessed with six godchildren: Ebony Harrison, Bridget Champman, Ka’Asia Harrison, Jordyn Douglas, Kenodra Gatlin, and Elizah Jackson; two special nieces, Youlanda (Bobby) Johnson of Bennettsville, South Carolina, and Sandra Grant of Society Hill, South Carolina; and two special friends, Dorethea (Jessi) Sanders and Mary (Curtis) Benjamin.
