“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. “ Revelation 21:4

On Friday, December 19, 2025, Walford McManus, Sr., affectionately known as “Sonny,” departed this life at the age of 70. Born in Pageland, South Carolina, on May 16, 1955, he was the beloved and only son of the late Odell Chester and Rennie McManus. He was educated in the Darlington County school system and graduated from Butler High School in 1973.

In 1979, he married Diane Mouzon of Darlington County after the birth of their firstborn. They then resided in Hartsville, South Carolina, where he worked for CP&L before relocating to Boston, Mass. It was there that he worked for the Boston Marriott Copley Place Hotel for 40 years. A few years following his migration, he then gave his life to Christ. He later joined his wife at the Zion Apostolic Church under the late Pastor Aurrie O. Dantley’s leadership. He was baptized in Jesus’ Name, and there he faithfully served as a deacon, a member of the men’s choir, a bass guitarist, a bus driver, and a contractor.

Throughout his life, Walford was known for his kind spirit and unwavering dedication to his loved ones. Friends and family recall his gentle humor and his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His commitment to hard work was evident early on, and he carried these values with him as he built a life rooted in service.

Walford’s devotion was the heartbeat of his life, evident in every endeavor. He was a devoted family man, a diligent worker, a passionate musician with a special love for quartets, and a Biblical teacher. But it was his enduring love and commitment to his beloved wife that truly defined him. For over 50 years, he selflessly provided and cared for her, exemplifying the true meaning of devotion. As a devoted deacon, Walford’s faith and service inspired many, radiating warmth and hope. With a style that rivaled the sharpest catwalks and a swagger that could charm the stars, Walford was a true original. Yet, it was his quiet strength, generosity, and encouragement that left an indelible mark on countless lives, touching hearts wherever he served.

Today, we honor his legacy and the lasting impact on his family, job associates, and church members; many grew to love him, respect him, and confide in him. To some, he is Sonny; to others, he is Daddy; to some, he is Paw Paw; but to many, he is loved.

Walford leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Diane M. McManus; nine children: Natasha Renee (Haywood) Williams, Walford O. McManus, Jr., Raphiel Price, Donna A. McManus, Michael Philip McManus, Daniel K. McManus, Ariel S. McManus, Timothy S. McManus, and Journey Murphy; sisters: Annie Grace (Silas) Hines, Nora Dow, Lucille (John) Graham, Carrie McManus, Suzette (Bobby) Addison, Lydell (Billy) Boyce, Mary McManus, and Teresa McManus Davis; twenty-three grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Walford’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who were privileged to know him. His legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to inspire future generations, reminding us of the impact one life can have on so many. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit remains a guiding light for his family and community.
